so whats a classic album? 90% of my record collection predates the 21st century. and i listen to the freakzone every week... so?

...I don't know what the expanse of music you listen to, it might be your already eclectic tastes. personally I would say mine isn't very, so I'm trying to change that and expand my horizons. also its not just about it being classic, I already know the usual of jd, pixies fore example etc, it has to be something you don't normally listen to as well a bit removed from your normal listening habits. I mean it might be you don't agree with me on my views or don't see the point of it thats fine, you don't have to take part...

Some of you might be ashamed to learn I've never listened to,well,i would say ANY of these bands. Not even bands like Joy Division,or The Smiths. OH THE SHAME. They might be a good starting point though i dare say?

^^yeah deffo. they're really easy to get into/accessible too I'd say, if your modern music taste is anything like a lot us around here. smiths was a strange one, it should have been something I immediately I liked, but moz put me off a bit (thomyorke don't light the stake yet :P) - but I dunno as I listened to it it grew and I really like a lot of their songs now. they're not my fave band, like some peeps go crazy over them, but I like them still and its really easy to appreciate the craft of the lyrics, as the music is a lot more straightforward I'd say...

You've never listened to the Smiths?! :o They are my favourite band, and I'd agree they are pretty easy to get into. Joy Division not so easy to get into, because they are just so so so bleak. But I love the melancholy.

joy division aren't bleak! they're cathartic and really quite comforting. i've listened to their music pretty much every day for 12 years.

^^^disorder and transmission are really joyous to me.
i like the idea of this project, but i never make myself listen to or what doesn't give me immediate pleasure. if you force yourself to listen to boring impressive music, you might become a loser.
but this won't happen if you're listening to depeche mode. check out a broken frame, speak and spell and music for the masses. they're awesome.

^^well I'm not torturing myself with it lol. I'm just listening to music from the past, to help me understand music "now" better. so far I havn't really hated anything, but I do acknowledge it's not going to be all rewarding as it has been, I no doubt won't get some music or it won't fit my tastes, but the idea is still good that I'm challenging myself.

only thing I do is I give things a few listens all the way through, somethings don't click straight away, but I can usually tell afterwhile quickly its not gelling, and I wont' pursue it any further. all during this time I havn't stopped listend to my "regular" music, I'm still listening to my general music I listen to day to day, like foals dananana, all the shoegaze stuff I'm accustomed to....

actually, i guess it's good to give a few listens. i do so much zapping around, that lots of stuff doesn't have the time to stick. it always puts me in a foul mood when i make myself listen to something and end up giving up though.

^^yeah it can do, it can get tiring if you're have few unrewarding runs of bands that you don't find satisfying... but equally once you hit on nuggetsyou get or find inspirational - its fantastic. I guess its a bit niggly, but I like doing fiddly things...
